Indonesia Encourages UAE to Enhance Partnership

Jakarta, IORA – RI Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi encouraged United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Maitha Salam Al Shamsi to enhance partnerships between members of the Association of Indian Ocean Rim (IORA) with the dialogue partners.

"The UAE is an active members of IORA and will chair this organization after South Africa. In this regard, I confide few things related to IORA to the UAE. Firstly, the issue of IORA’s partnership with its dialogue partners," said Minister Retno Marsudi on a bilateral meeting between Indonesia and UAE at Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Monday (3/6).

The Minister said it is important for IORA member states to continue and enhance the partnership with IORA dialogue partners.

"I encourage that dialogue habit with IORA dialogue partners both at ministerial level and high officials to be continued," she said.

According to her, the UAE government highly appreciated Indonesia’s request and is committed to continuing what is proposed by Indonesia.

In addition to bilateral meeting with UAE Foreign Minister, Minister Retno Marsudi also conducted several other bilateral meetings on the sidelines of IORA Summit, among others are bilateral meetings with Singapore Foreign Minister Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman, Union of Comoros Foreign Minister Mohamed Bacar Dossar, Mauritius Foreign Minister Seetanah Lutchmeenaraidoo.

Indonesia Government chaired IORA summit along with South Aftica Government as its vice chair, and Australia as IORA’s former chair.

The theme used in the IORA meeting under the chairmanship of Indonesia is "Strengthening Maritime Cooperation for Peaceful, Stable, and Prosperous Indian Ocean".

IORA series of meetings will be held on March 5 to 7, 2017. The event is preceded by senior-official meeting on March 5, a ministerial meeting on March 6, and leaders’ summit on March 7.

IORA which comprises of 21 member states is a major organization in the Indian Ocean region and plays an important role in strengthening regional security cooperation.
