Jakarta, IORA – President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo is convinced that the Indian Ocean region is emerging as the key global axis. “Indonesia believes that the Indian Ocean is emerging as one of the key global axis in the world affairs,” President Jokowi said when inaugurating the 2017 IORA Leaders’ Summit at the Jakarta Convention Center, on Tuesday (3/7).
President Jokowi also welcomed all delegates in commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the IORA which comes at a critical time for the world economy and possibly for humanity. “It seems increasingly that the world is now in a global revolution. First, a technology revolution that is relentless, in its penetration, to make changes forward,” the President said.
Second, a political revolution that may signal the beginning of an era of populism.
President Jokowi said that for hundreds of years, the Atlantic Ocean has dominated the world and within the last 30 years, it has shifted to East Asia so that many said this is the Century of the Pacific Ocean.
“However, we believe that the Indian Ocean is poised to rise with great societies and economies which play an important role in East Asia, Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia and Australia, the President said.
President Jokowi mentioned that the IORA community is unique because it is an area at once rich, yet with many large pockets of poverty. “The IORA community is an area which is rich in traditions,” the President said.
Also present at the inauguration of the IORA Summit were IndonesianVice President Jusuf Kalla, Head of Indonesian Supreme Audit Agency Harry Azhar Azis and ambassadors of friendly countries.
